Where to find a downloaded MP3 on iPhone and Android
You converted a TikTok, Instagram or Facebook video to MP3 and the download looks finished, and still nothing shows up in your music. That is very common: an MP3 downloaded from a browser is not placed automatically in your Music app. Here is where it is.
On iPhone
Safari saves the file in the Files app.
- After the download, tap the down-arrow icon in Safari's address bar, then Downloads.
- Or open the Files app, then Browse, On My iPhone (or iCloud Drive) and the Downloads folder.
- Tap the file to play it. A long press lets you share, rename or send it to another app.
Apple's Music app does not import MP3 files straight from Files. To add them to your library you need a computer and sync, or a player app that reads files from the Files app.
On Android
Chrome puts the file in the Downloads folder.
- Open the Files app (or "File manager").
- Go to Downloads: the MP3 is there, sorted by date.
- Tap it to play with your audio player. Most players also detect it on their own after a few minutes.
To use it as a ringtone, open your phone's sound settings and pick the file as a custom ringtone. The exact path depends on the brand.
On a computer
Windows and Mac save the file in the Downloads folder, unless you picked another folder in your browser settings. In Chrome, Ctrl + J (or Cmd + Shift + J on Mac) opens the download list, where you can click "Show in folder".
How to recognise the right file
- The name ends with
.mp3. - The size is small: at 192 kbit/s, one minute of audio is about 1.4 MB.
- The date matches your last download: sort the folder by date.
The file cannot be found
- The download did not finish: go back to the tool page and try again. If the link is refused, read video download not working: fixes.
- The browser asked where to save and you chose another folder: look in "Recent".
- You are in private browsing: the file is saved, but the browser's download list may be empty once closed.
- Storage is full: free some space and try again.
Getting an MP3 from a video
For the conversion step you have several routes: TikTok to MP3, Instagram video audio as MP3, Facebook video as MP3, or the video to MP3 converter directly. If the file has no sound, read downloaded video has no sound.
Keep your MP3 organised
Downloads pile up quickly. Create a folder called "Audio" in the Files app or on your computer and move the MP3 files there as soon as they are saved. Rename them with something meaningful, such as the topic and the date, so you can find one in seconds. If you convert many videos, delete the ones you no longer need to free some space.
A word on rights
An MP3 taken from a video stays protected by its creator's copyright and, for music, its artist's. Keep it for personal use. Do not repost it or use it in a public project without permission. This is not legal advice.
