Downloaded video has no sound: causes and fixes
You download a video, open it, and hear nothing. Before assuming the tool is broken, know that the cause is usually simple and takes seconds to fix. Here are the most common situations and what to do.
1. The sound is off on your device, not in the file
This is the number one cause. Check these first:
- The media volume (not only the ringer): raise it with the side buttons while the video plays.
- The iPhone silent switch: some playback apps stay quiet when it is on.
- Bluetooth headphones or speakers: the audio may be going to a device that is still connected somewhere else.
- The player: try the same file in another video player.
2. The original video had no sound
On TikTok, Instagram or Facebook, a creator can publish a video with no audio track, or the music may have been removed afterwards. Open the original post in the app: if it is silent there too, the downloaded file will be silent. A downloader cannot create sound that does not exist at the source.
3. The music was removed for rights reasons
A video can lose its sound when a track is no longer available on the platform, for example after a rights dispute. In that case the audio is already missing at the source. You can try again later, but there is no guarantee it will come back.
4. The link is not the right one
A link copied from a messaging app, a shortened link or a profile link can give unexpected results. Copy the link again with the platform's own Share button, as explained in how to copy a video link, then try again with the TikTok downloader or the one for the platform you use.
5. The player cannot handle the audio codec
Rare, but possible on an old player or an out-of-date computer: the picture plays and the sound does not. Try an up-to-date player (VLC is a common choice) or open the file directly in your browser.
6. You only wanted the sound
If you only need the audio, skip the video: use the video to MP3 converter. You get a 192 kbit/s audio file that is much lighter.
Quick checklist
- Watch the video in the original app: does it have sound there?
- Raise the media volume and disconnect Bluetooth devices.
- Copy the link with the Share button and download again.
- Test the file in another player.
- If nothing changes, the source is probably silent.

A simple test to find the cause
Play another video you saved long ago, in the same player. If you hear it, your device is fine and the issue comes from the file or the source. If that one is silent too, the problem is on your phone or computer: volume, Bluetooth or player. The test takes ten seconds and saves you from repeating ten downloads for nothing.
